Term 1 Update
Our challenge question this term is ‘Was Viking and Anglo Saxon life all about fighting?’
We will explore where the Anglo Saxons came from, why and when. Then we’ll look at the reasons behind the Viking invasion, how they travelled and the nature of the fighting that took place between them.
There will also be study into the life outside of the battles, before investigating the events which built up the Norman Conquest in1066.
We also hope to have a special visitor to school to help us have a Viking day!
Our book for English lessons this term is ‘The Man Who Walked Between the Towers’ by Mordicai Gerstein.
We will work towards writing a setting description and a persuasive letter this term.
This term we will be looking at forces, including the effect of gravity. Following half term, we will switch our science theme to materials and their properties.
It is expected and imperative that children in Year 5 are reading a wide range of texts. We would like the children to be reading at least 5 times a week. As in previous years, we will supply you with a reading diary to record your child’s reading. Even though the children are now at an age where they will enjoy reading alone, please ensure that there are opportunities where they are able to read aloud to a family member. This is also an opportunity to create discussion around the text, broadening the child’s understanding of what they are reading.
Note: We do allow the Year 5 children to occasionally record their own entry in their reading diary but it is still required for an adult to initial/sign this.
Homework will return to being sent home in a folder this term. Each week on a Monday, spellings will be sent home. Please do look, cover, write, check one list per day, 5 days a week. These sheets will be due in on Friday.
Times tables need to be practiced three times a week on TT Rockstars.
Our maths learning this term will involve number and place value, decimals and some geometry too. Children will be required to have a solid understanding of their multiplication and division facts. This is crucial to their understanding of number, and it allows children to grasp fully the concepts (such as fractions, decimals and percentages) that we will be studying this year.
Children will be required to come to school in their P.E. kit. Outdoor PE is on a Mondayafternoon. Indoor PE is on a Thursday afternoon.
Please come to school with your kits on ready on these two days. We will aim to do PE no matter what the weather so please ensure your child has the correct kit i.e. house coloured t-shirt and black or blue shorts, trainers are preferred to daps for use on the field, spare pair of socks and warm jumpers/joggers for cold weather. Please provide earring tape if your child’s earrings cannot be removed.
We look forward to a brilliant year ahead, and to working with you all to ensure the happiness and success of your children.
