What will we be learning this term?
Our Learning Challenge Question this term is 'How would World War II have affected you?' This history topic will explore life during this period and the effect that it had on children of the time. We will be looking at evacuation and rationing, as well as key events in the war.
In English, the children will be studying the texts, 'Hugo Cabret' and the WWII-inspired text, 'Rose Blanche'. Over this term, we will have a strong focus on all of the Year 6 objectives, reviewing, where necessary, objectives from Year 5.
In Science, we will be looking at 'Our bodies', where we will be identifying the main parts of the human circulatory system and will describe the functions of the heart, blood vessels and blood. We will also look at how water and nutrients are transported through the body and investigate the effect exercise has on pulse rates. After the half term, we will focus on our topic of 'Changing Circuits' where the children will learn how to recognise symbols in circuit diagrams correctly and discuss and offer their own explanations from their investigations into how to alter the brightness of bulbs and volume of buzzers.
Mrs Guest will continue to teach Music to the children, and Mrs Hall will be teaching RE over the year. These lessons will take place on Monday afternoons.
It is expected and imperative that children in Year 6 are reading a wide range of texts. We would ideally like the children to be reading at least 5 times a week. As in previous years, we will supply you with a reading diary to record your child's reading. Even though the children are now at an age where they will enjoy reading alone, please ensure that there are opportunities where they are able to read aloud to a family member. This is also an opportunity to create discussion around the text, broadening the child's understanding of what they are reading.
Spellings will be sent home for children to learn weekly. These will be sent home on a Wednesday. Children will be required to follow the 'look, cover, write, check' method each day, 5 days a week. These sheets will be due in the following Monday, ready for their test.
Children will be required to have a solid understanding of their multiplication and division facts. This is crucial to their understanding of number, and allows children to grasp fully the concepts (such as fractions, decimals and percentages) that we will be studying this year. To aid with this, we will be putting emphasis on and encouraging the use of 'Times Tables Rock Stars' at home. This will allow children to practise this area of Maths, without the need for paperwork to be transferred between home and school.
Similarly to last year, the children will be required to come to school in their P.E. kit for their P.E days. Our indoor P.E session will run on Tuesday afternoons and our outdoor P.E. session will run on Friday afternoons. We will aim to do PE no matter what the weather so please ensure your child has the correct kit i.e. house coloured t-shirt and black or blue shorts, trainers are preferred to daps for use on the field, spare pair of socks and warm jumpers/joggers for cold weather. Please provide earring tape if your child's earrings cannot be removed.
