Take a Break from Driving This World Car-free Day

Take a Break from Driving This World Car-free Day

It seems like every day a new study about the damage we inflict on the environment is published. These studies are filled with worrying statistics about pollution, and horrifying timelines for the future of our planet. The situation will not improve until we start to take action.

Today, 22nd September, is World Car-free Day, an international event that encourages motorists to give up their cars for a day. Activities take place all over the world and have a variety of benefits. Not only do they highlight the damage our cars do to the environment; they also provide an insight into our locality without excess traffic congestion and vehicles.

The main aim, however, is to demonstrate just how dangerous our usage of cars is. Air pollutants emitted from cars are believed to cause cancer and contribute to such problems as asthma, heart disease, birth defects, and eye irritation.

At Bowerhill Primary School, we want our children to live in a world free from pollution. They deserve a flourishing, natural environment; not a damaged environment that can directly impact their own health and wellbeing.

Spending a day without driving your car is just one way to minimise your carbon footprint and reduce your impact on the environment. As a school, we actively encourage our children, their families, and our school community to be conscious of their choices and the environmental impact they have.

Educating children on the environment, pollution, and the problems our actions are causing is vital to achieving a greener, more sustainable future, and we hope that marking World Car-free Day is a step toward a more environmentally friendly world.
